Improv Weekend

It’s Sunday morning, and I’m catching up on WWE Smackdown and catching my breath after a whirlwind weekend of improv. On Friday night Only Rollercoasters performed in Washington DC thanks to an invite from the Happy Buddha. The show was at DCAC, a lovely black box theater in one of DC’s hipper areas, Adams Morgan. This is the second time I’ve performed at DCAC and I’ve seen a few other improv shows there.

Only Rollercoasters opened the show and our input was Calligraphy. Obviously this led to a number of samurai battles throughout. Obviously. After our set, was the incomparable Aboulia, one of my favorite troupes. They killed it, I could watch them improvise all day.

Topher and Dave did some great multicasting that had the whole crowd in stitches. I’ve seen plenty of duo multicasting, but I’ve never seen anyone else play the number and variety of characters in a set the way Topher and Dave did. It was an inspiration and makes me want to step up my improv game. The show was a benefit for Toys for Tots. In the last set, Jeff brought up four marines to get input. The night was a blast!

We spent Saturday night at Zissimos. Megan and I performed our banjolele duo for the first time as part of A Very Project Holiday. We sang four Xmas songs, and we printed out lyric sheets so everyone could sing along. It has been years since I played music on stage. And though I was rusty, we got through the songs without MAJOR incident, and the crowd sang along for maximum merriment. Uncle Awesome closed out the show with an incredibly high energy set. I did that thing where you run out the front door and come back in the back door.

The 10PM Gorilla & Chicken show was chock full of local comics. We had Josh doing the guest voice of Gorilla. And Chicken hosted the show. People really seem to get a kick out of getting introduced by a chicken. Except for Mike Moran who beheaded my dear friend Chicken.

It's A Wonderful Life!

Last night, Megan and I went to see It's A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play at Center Stage. The set was made to look like WBAL radio in the 40s. Watching them do a "radio show" was fun. I didn't get too into the story though. Maybe a generation ago it was easier to cheer for the president of a savings and loans. It seemed to me that George got into some trouble securing loans for people who may not have been financial ready for them. Also banks create make money on interest by making loans from money they don't have. The whole thing's a sham wrapped in cabals.

All of the performers did multiple voices and there was a musician / foley artist on the side to add some holiday spice! On the way out, we found a station with different instruments to make noise with. The mini-door made a great sound for entrances and exits. They also had some glasses set up to spin your finger around to make a sound and a bunch of other sound makers.

Megan bought me a season pass to Center Stage for my birthday this year, and this is the third show of the show. The next play is One Night in Miami... Looks interesting!

Club Orbit

Friday night, I performed with my troupes Moonbot and Only Rollercoasters at Club Orbit. Club Orbit is the show that Moonbot hosts for Charm City Comedy Project on the second Friday of every month. It was a really fun show. There were only three performers for Only Rollercoasters, and we performed a monoscene outta nowhere! The Moonbot set was fun and we got tons of laugh!

After the 8pm show, I hosted the open mic. We have a core of great comics that show up every week. Friday night though, we had a HUGE crowd and a bunch of new comics! Nell from Moonbot did amazing on her first stand-up set! Also my good friend, Joe P, came out and did a strong five minutes on his first time out the gate!

The whole night was so much fun and Club Orbit is fast becoming one of my favorite shows that we do!
